Puligny-Montrachet: 1er et Grand Cru

Puligny-Montrachet is one of my favourite appellation in Burgundy, so it was very exiting to compare all these top producers blind!!  Terroir rules in Burgundy and the classification was pretty well respected… The Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru was the clear winner (28 votes)… 2nd place to Henri Boillot was a magic Clos de la mouchère (18 votes) and 3rd place to Pierre Yves Colin Morey (13 votes)… The Saint-Aubin 1er Cru were fantastic, but all beaten by their Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru from the same producer, which showed more complexity and lenght.

2012 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bourgogne Blanc
Light nose of golden apple, hint of grilled hazelnut… taste very much yellow apple with citrus finish, hint of greeness… good but not great! (88 points)

2015 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bourgogne Blanc
Nice nose of very mineral, loads of citrus, oysters… taste is very sharp minerality, grany smith apple, flintstones… very special, I hope everybody will love this particular style!! (89 points)

2014 Gerard Thomas Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chatenière
Light smoky nose, yellow and green apple, hint of minerality… Very delicate, laser sharp fresh acidity, good fatness, grilled hazelnut, yellow apple, very feminine and delicate! (90 points)

2014 Gerard Thomas Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien
Quite nice concentrated mineral nose, flintstone, yellow and green apple… good concentration, of citrus minerality, great lenght of 20 seconds! (92 points)

2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chatenière
Loads of grilled hazelnut, brioche, pain grille, yellow apple, mineral citrus… Pure silky citrus, green apple, some fat smoothening the acidity, very delicious!! (94 points)

2014 Gerard Thomas Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne
Wow… Very concentrated and complex nose of citrus with orange blossom, oyster shelves … very concentrated taste of citrus and orange blossom, very fresh acidity and mineral (94 points)

2014 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Puligny-Montrachet
Very grany smith apple nose, hint of petrol… very high acidity, green apple, mineral, picant… much too young, should improve with age (91 points)

1998 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières
Nice nose of nuts, yellow apple, grilled hazelnuts… Very fat, brioche, probably a bit over the hill but still very nice! (91 points)

1998 Domaine Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet
Very oxydized, nuts, nuts, nuts, levure… was probably better 10 years ago… totally over the hill… (85 points)

2014 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère
Huge nose of grilled hazelnuts, brioche, golden apples, matchstick, very mineral, laser sharp nose… taste is woaouw, with huge mineral citrus, matchstick, nice fatness, lenght of 45 seconds! great great wine!! (96 points)

2013 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain
Nice nose of citrus and loads of orange blossom… very concentrated, orange, flinstone, matchstick, laser sharp acidity… very very nice aftertaste, great great wine, I just love Pierre Yves wines!! (95 points)

2011 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon
very green herbal nose, green apple… taste is green apple, nice mineral, but lacking a bit of complexity, overall impression is picant with some “paint” impression… good but not up to it’s level… (91 points)

2013 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bâtard-Montrachet
beautiful nose of accacia honey, flintstone, mineral, orange blossom… wow wow taste of powerful honey with laser sharp acidity, minerality, super feminine and 45 sec aftertaste!! (97 points)
