Tuscany: Percarlo vs. Flaccianello 1989 – 2010

Percarlo-Flaccianello

1st flight: Amazing how different these 2 wines were, with both a hint of reduction, but the 2nd one in the style of a great old white Burgundy… great discovery!!

2003 Mas Jullien Blanc
A hint of reduction on the nose, brioche, yellow apple, mineral… nice acidity, yellow apple, nice lenght, fat finish (89 points)

1999 Mas Jullien Blanc
Powerful nose, hint of reduction, old Burgundy style, yellow apple, apricot, mineral… very poserful taste, sappy yellow apple, very long, hint of mineral, very fat finish, great old white!! (92 points)

2nd Flight was the the Chiantis from both wineries, to me okay wines, but the flagsips are much more exciting!!

2007 San Giusto a Rentennano Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baroncole
Nice nose of balsamic, red cranberries, animal, gamey, nice volatile iodine… high acidity getting smoother with food, red berries, nice wine! (90 points)

2007 Fontodi Chianti Classico
Nice nose of vanilla, graphite, lead pencil, ripe black fruit… taste of light ripe black fruit, hint of acidity, drying tannins improving with food (89 points)

3rd flight are the young ones… I was originally impressed by the big extracted Flaccianello, but finally with food and aeration, the Percarlo 2009 was the clear winner!!

2009 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT
Light nose of ripe red and black cherries, incense, hint of vanilla, sandalwood… loads of ripe red berries, very high acidity, cold tannins, balsamic profile, with a hint of sweetness at the finish that balances the high acidity quite well… imporved a lot with air from 91/100 at opening to 95/100 during the meal!! (95 points)

2010 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
Nice nose of black fruit, mineral, still quite closed, hint of nice volatile acidity, … loads of fresh tannins, with loads of fresh red fruit, tons of material, but still much too young at this point.. this wine closed down with aeration, from 97/100 at opening to 94/100 during the meal (94 points)

4th Flight: The 2004’s shows that these wines need minimum 10 years to approach maturity… and here again the Percarlo was the winner

2004 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT
Loads of animal, meaty, bacon fat, beautiful nose, ripe strawberries, nice acidity, … loads of silky tannins, red cherries, freshness, hint of balsamic, good lenght! (96 points)

2004 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
Loads of lead pencil, black fruit, mineral, hint of balsamic… very very concentrated with loads of extraction, ripe tannins and loads of black fruit, very cold tannins (94+ points)

5th flight: the 1997, too bad that we had a corked Percarlo 1997… but the Flaccianello showed really well!!

1997 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
Nose of animal, feasant, leather, ripe cherries, sandalwood, cedar… very sweet tannins, leather, very long and delicious!! (97 points)

Finally, with teh generosity of our hosts… THE surprized… Percarlo 1989 from MAGNUM!! Yes, this is to me probably te best Percarlo ever… nothing less that that… thank you Nico for pulling this one from your great cellar 😉

1989 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT
Beautiful nose of gamey, soy sauce, balsamic, leather, cedar… taste is delicious sweet tannins, balsamic, sandalwood, ripe red cherries, sappy acidity, great great mature Percarlo… BRAVO!!! (98 points)

2008 Chapoutier and Laughton Shiraz La Pleïade
Nose of cassis, black berries, characoal, cêpes de Bordeaux, Mokka… taste of very ripe red cherries, ripe tannins, enormous acidity that is balancing the fruit, tannins very ripe and silky… the best of both worlds (96 points)
