Tuscany 1997 & 2007

July 22, 2013

Tasting Sangiovese at JP
We started with two great young brunello’s, both very different in style… one traditional and one modern. My experience is that the Lisini’s are ageing very well, as I had a fantastic Lisini 1997 a few weeks ago!

2007 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino (7/2/2013)
Nose of red berries, sandalwood, tobacco, sappy acidity, tannin presence but quite ripe, hint of bitterness in the finish… nice old school wine! (93 points)

2007 Azienda Agraria Lisini Brunello di Montalcino (7/2/2013)
Sweet berries, ripe cherries, nice volatile acidity… medium concentration, red berries, tannins present, just a bit light in style (91 points)

The 2007 is great vintage for Percarlo, unfortunatey the Pergole Torte didn’t show well… I hope it was a bad bottle…
2007 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT (7/2/2013)
Very very nice volatile acidity, leather, ripe red berries, turf, nice spices… taste of very very silky tannins, sappy red berries, beautiful nice turf acidity…. great Percarlo!! (96 points)

2007 Azienda Agricola Montevertine Le Pergole Torte Toscana IGT (7/2/2013)
A bit heavy red acid cherries, hint of dust… Vineagar taste, not good, I hope this is not a representative bottle… no cork taste or smell… (NR/flawed)

Very funny to see that two wines sourced from the same place at release can age so differently
1997 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia (7/2/2013)
Nose of leather, sandalwood, horse shit, cedar… very sappy, nice acidity, ripe red berries and red strawberries (93 points)

1997 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia (7/2/2013)
Nose of gamey, oriental spices, peperonis… powerful tannins, very young 92+/100… it is amazing how these 2 same wines, bought at the same place same time… but conservated in different places can be so different!! (92 points)

It was not fair to put the mature flaccianello in front of the Fontalloro…
1997 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro (7/2/2013)
Nose of brown sugar, sandalwood, leather… tertiary fruit, leather, average lenght but still nice mature wine!!(91 points)

1997 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT (7/2/2013)
Huge nose of wild feasant, nice volatile acidity, beautiful ripe strawberries…. super beautiful ripe tannins, very long and silky… this is the wine that opened my eyes on Tuscany 🙂 (96 points)

We ended with two Cabernets… the Sassicaia was a bit dissapointing and tasting very strongly the peperonis

1997 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT (7/2/2013)
Nose of eucalyptus, cedar, black ripe cherries… tannic, red cherries, average lenght, cabernet style (93 points)

1997 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia Sassicaia (7/2/2013)
Super green peperonis, belt peper… ripe cherries, very ripe and light tannins…. a bit dissapointing for it’s pedigree… (92 points)
