Bourgogne blanc – Pierre Yves Colin Morey

PYCM 2018

Pierre Yves Colin Morey has been a favorite in recent white Burgundy tastings… So it was time to dedicate a tasting focusing on this talented winemaker!

In a nutshell, the main learnings are that the St-Aubin are definitely in the league of great wines… 2010 vintage was absolutely gorgeous and at perfect maturity at age of 8… The 1er Cru were a bit too ripe compared to the perfectly balance village wine, but improved a lot after 3 hours aeration… The Grand Cru was way too young at age a 4 and waste of wine… But overall a very memorable tasting!!

2016 Gerard Thomas Bourgogne Blanc
Nice nose of mineral, wet stones, yellow grass dryed in the sun, green apple, hint of vanilla… Taste laser sharp vanilla & citrus, very nice for an entry level Burgundy! (90 points)

2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bourgogne Blanc
Light nose of yellow apple, grilled hazelnuts, hint of greenness… very pure green & yellow apple, nice concentration for an entry level Burgundy! (91 points)

2015 Gerard Thomas Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chatenière
Very nice nose of honey, fleur d’accacia, yellow grass, yellow apple, nice mineral smell… Ananas, exotic fruit, nice citrus & mineral finish. (93 points)

2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chatenière
WOW, huge nose of matchstick, grilled hazelnut, yellow apples, ananas, mineral…. Nice concentration, yellow citrus & mineral first, oystershell, lenght 30 sec! (94 points)

2010 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault Les Narvaux
Huge matchstick and ananas, yellow grass… Super delicious and sappy mineral, honey & citrus finish, I really like this vintage & style!! Perfectly mature at age of 8. (94 points)

2010 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet Le Trézin
Very powerful nose, full of mineral, almost sulfur stone! Iodine penetrating nose… Rich citrus and ananas, nice mineral in the background, superb & nice balance, great great wine!! (94 points)

2013 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain
Ripe ananas, mineral & sulfur, hint of honey… Nice concentration, nice acidity, hint of mineral, hint of herbal in the finish… Good, but below the level of village Puligny 2010!! (93 points)

2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
Candied nose, more ripe than the village wines, with less acidity… Very nice mineral taste, hint of citrus, good but a little bit below the village wines of 2010 vintage… (92 points)

2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne
Nose of coing, classic mineral & citrus, grilled hazelnut, still very restrained at this stage, but refined and feminine… Loads of green apples, citrus, yellow apple finish, very delicate and great lenght of 60 seconds… wait 5 more years before retasting!! (94+ points)

La montagne de Corton: Capitain-Gagnerot

This domain located on the foot of the montagne de Corton has always been a favourite since about 20 years I’m visiting them… They seem to improve their winemaking year-in year-out… their 2015 and 2016 are a big success!!

Nose of cerise “croquante”, mineral… Very sappy, “croquant”, ripe tannin, nice acidity, nice lenght, très “gourmand” – Terroir argilo-calcaire (92 points)

Spicy nose, red berries, chalky… Light red berries, very mineral red cherries, nice freshness, good lenght (94 points)

2015 Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot Corton-Maréchaudes
Very spicy nose, framboises mûres, pain d’épices, cerise confite… Super silky tannin, ripe red cherries, nice spiciness, super sappy grand Cru, lenght of 30 sec, delicious wine!! (96 points)

 

 

Puligny-Montrachet: Tour de la montagne

It is always very learnful to taste side by side the Puligny Montrachet wines blind against their St-Aubin peers, as they are located on the same mountain, touching each other… The St-Aubins performed great… But the Puligny’s from Pierre Yves Colin Morey (Le Trezin) and the Puligny 1er Cru from Henri Boillot were absolutely killer wines!!

Nice nose of flintstones, matchstick, noisettes grillées, citrus, honey… Super delicious, smoky, citrus, flintstones, super finish, great great village wine at 1er Cru level easy!! (93 points)

2011 Louis Jadot Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien
Very nice nose of mineral, green apple, quite spicy… Light taste of green apple, lacking a bit of mineral, good acidity, loads of spices… (91 points)

Smoky nose, hint of vanilla, nice mineral… Very high tension, nice mineral, super citrus, very nice!! (92 points)

2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet Le Trézin
Super nice nose of grilled hazelnuts, citrus, smoke… Very very long aftertaste, super tension, citrus, nice yellow apple fatness… Lenght of 45 sec, at level of 1er Cru easy!! (95 points)

2013 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère
Huge nose of hazelnut, matchstick, huge citrus… Smoky, nice tension, superb lenght… Not the best vintage of mouchère, but still the #1 best wine of the night!! (96 points)

2013 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bâtard-Montrachet
Huge nose of honey, ripe tropical fruit, yellow apple, lacking a bit of mineral and citrus… taste of honey, green apple, freshly cut grass, huge lenght of 60 sec but lacking a bit of mineral and citrus… (94 points)

 

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello 2018

Brunello di Montalcino is one of my favorite region in Italy… It was very interesting to check how the 10-20 years old Brunello are evolving, and also evaluate the potential of their younger sibblings 🙂

2015 Pertimali Maremma Toscana Istriciaia
Huge nose of cold ripe black fruit, cedar wood, hint of licorice… hint of harsh tannin, cold black fruit (89 points)

2012 Pertimali Maremma Toscana Istriciaia
Very nice nose of ripe strawberries, cedar wood… Taste of super delicious ripe strawberries, sappy tannin, great acidity that matches well with food! (90 points)

2015 Livio Sassetti Rosso di Montalcino
Nice nose of red fruit, cedar wood, forest floor… Nice taste of black cherries, super silky tannin, very refined and feminine, a mini Brunello! (91 points)

2009 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino
Superb nose of BBQ, bacon fat, roasted cherries, red cranberries… Loads of sappy tannin, red berries, hint of drying tannin, quite evolved and mature Brunello! (93 points)

2010 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino
Huge nose of ripe strawberries, iodine, loads of cedar wood, cèpes de Bordeaux… Loads of cold tannins, red berries, lenght of 30 seconds… Wait 5 years before opening a next bottle! (92 points)

2004 Agostina Pieri Brunello di Montalcino
It’s amazing how this wine has improved after 14 years… Very ripe nose of black cherries, bacon… Loads of very ripe tannins, ripe red cherries, lacking a bit of acidity at opening, but has improved dramatically with 3 hours of bottle opening!! (96 points)

2001 Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso
Loads of methol, eucalyptus, hint of nail paint at opening dissapeared after 3 hours aeration… Ripe tannins, red cherries, showing hint of alcohol at opening but is the wine that improved the most after 3 hours opening!! (92 points)

2013 Livio Sassetti Brunello di Montalcino
Nice nose of herbes de Provence, red cherries, bacon, cèpes de Bordeaux… Super delicate and refined tannin, red ripe berries, super sappy tannin, very sexy, feminine and refreshing wine, lenght of 30 sec! (95 points)

2012 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Huge and delicious nose of cedar wood, herbes de Provence, hint of bacon, cèpes de Bordeaux… Loads of sappy tannin, superb balance, ripe red berries, super silky tannins, lenght of 30 sec!! (96 points)

1997 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino
Very dark colour and seems still pretty young for it’s age!! Huge nose of cèpes de Bordeaux, leather, Havana cigar, BBQ sauce, roasted meat, great great nose… Super concentrated, but sappy tannin, loads of ripe and cold black cherries, good acidity, lenght of 60 sec, fantastic Brunello (98 points)

A tale of two Yquem

We expected the 1997 Yquem to perform above the 1998… But as we say, there are no great old wines, only great bottles… So this time it was the Yquem 1998 that was singing!!  Big thanks to Jaco for popping this Yquem graciously from his cellar 🙂

1998 Château d’Yquem
It was very pale yellow colour… but nose was piecing of Ananas, lychee, white flowers, really penetrating nose… the tqste was similar flavours, but also very fresh and lively… a great Yquem that has still a long life ahead!! (95 points)

1997 Château d’Yquem
Colour is quite golden… nose of apricot, caramel, smoke, it is great but lacking a little bit finesse and acidity… The taste is a little bit too sweet and sugary for me… but still good Yquem! (91 points)

Villers-La-Vigne – Made in Belgium!!

My Friend Zoltan is making this wine in Belgium with a few passionate friends, and I must admit, it is for me the best red wine I’ve tasted from Belgian Vineyards… Well done guys!! But unfortunately only a few hundreds bottles produced each year, so virtually impossible ton find if you are not a good friend 🙂

2017 Villers la Vigne – REGENT – Vin de Belgique
Very nice nose of cold black fruit, carbonic maceration… Very delicious, loads of fresh and ripe red cherries, red berries, fully integrated tannin. (90 points)

2016 will be a legend vintage according to Thierry Usseglio!!  It was very interesting to taste these 2016 barrel samples at very early stage compared to the same wines from great vintages 5 or 10 years older!!

Nice nose of honey, citrus, mineral, silex… Yellow apple, good fatness, hint of citrus, lacking a bit acidity and tension (91 points)
